For Health Information Management (HIM) Graduate Programs

Definition: Health Information Management (HIM) at the master's degree level leads to executive level health information management, enterprise wide HIM leadership, administration, education or research. HIM is focused on the strategic and operational relevance and robustness of clinical information resources, workflow, and connectivity within the healthcare industry and public heath sectors.

Graduate programs in Health Information Management (HIM) seeking CAHIIM accreditation must apply using the CAHIIM Accreditation System (CAS) by going to the E-Accreditation New Programs/Login drop down link of this section and follow the instructions for application.

The program should apply using the e-accreditation link at the left navigation bar.
Please visit the e-accreditation/CAS Resources link for full information on the Registration and Application process.

NOTE: Upon approval of the application stage, CAHIIM Staff will provide an electronic template for the Self-Assessment section (Stage 3).

The accreditation process is not complete until the program is reviewed and awarded an accreditation decision by CAHIIM.

For Health Informatics (HI) Graduate Programs

Definition: Health Informatics (HI) is a science that defines how health information is technically captured, transmitted and utilized. Health informatics can be considered “trans-disciplinary” and focuses on information systems, informatics principles, and information technology as it is applied to the continuum of healthcare delivery. It is an integrated discipline with specialty domains that include management science, management engineering principles, healthcare delivery and public health, patient safety, information science and computer technology. Health Informatics graduate programs  demonstrate uniqueness by offering varied options for practice or research focus. 

For graduate programs in Health Informatics (HI) seeking CAHIIM Accreditation:

Programs may complete the Registration and Application prcoesses in the CAS System. Further information regarding the final CAHIIM Standards for Master’s Degree Programs in Health Informatics and the application information will be made available to programs beginning March 1, 2010.
